    Amended returns · Form 1040-X

Something was wrong on a return you already filed.

A 1099 that showed up late, a corrected K-1, the wrong filing status, a credit nobody claimed. We check whether amending is worth it before you pay for it.

Three years from the original due date to claim a refund. That window is usually the whole decision.
Some things don't need an amendment at all — arithmetic and a few missing forms the IRS fixes itself. We'll say so.
A federal 1040-X usually needs a matching state amendment. Both get filed, not just the easy one.
Got a CP2000? Answer the notice — amending on top of an open notice slows everything down.

    What needs correcting?

We'll check the refund window and tell you whether it's worth filing.

If amending won't pay for itself, we'll tell you that instead of selling you one. Flat fee quoted on the call.

    Usually worth amending

Income was reported that isn't on the return — better from you than from a CP2000.
Filing status or dependents were wrong — the refund difference is often large.
A credit was missed: education, child and dependent care, energy, foreign tax.
A corrected K-1 changed your share of income or loss.

    Usually not

Arithmetic errors — the IRS recalculates those and writes to you.
The refund window has closed — nothing to claim, so the fee buys nothing.
The change is a few dollars either way — not worth the processing time.

    Straight answers

How long does a 1040-X take?

Months, not weeks — IRS processing of amended returns is slow, and e-filed ones move faster than paper. We'll give you a realistic range for your year and keep an eye on the status.

    Does amending invite an audit?

An amended return gets a human look, which is exactly why the paperwork behind it matters. Documented, well-explained changes are routine; vague ones invite questions.

Can you amend a return someone else filed?

Yes, and that's most of this work. We don't need your old preparer's cooperation — the transcript plus a copy of the return is enough.

Bring the letter and the return

Fifteen minutes is usually enough to know whether you're amending, responding to a notice, or leaving it alone.
